Heart of Darkness seems like a fitting theme for my bedroom.

Right about now your New Year's resolutions are looking like a stinking pile of failure on your floor but not me!  I'm coasting on a high of energy and the thoughts of fresh digs.  Thanks, Vitamin D and low expectations!

After this past year of, well, doing nothing, I finally opened my eyes and I do not like what I see.  It's time for a change.  I'm cleaning out closets, purging things to Goodwill, moving furniture but mostly making a mess by starting a million projects at once and not finishing anything yet.  However, my main order of business is my bedroom and have been thinking about color first and foremost.

*cue collective groan*

I am - admittedly - TERRIBLE at choosing paint color for myself.  Friends, long-time readers and the unfortunate staff at every Ace Hardware in the tri-state area can attest to this.  I usually spend more money on swatches than actual paint and it will take months of agony and waffling before I make up my mind and then I usually am only partially happy with it.

I'll pick your paint color in five seconds.  My walls paralyze and confound me.  But I'm going bold with my decision making speed AND color choice this time.

I've moving to the jungle!

Just kidding.  Kinda.

I can't get enough of this deep, lush green color, ya feel me?

Oliver Osborne

It's similar to Hunter Green but less preppy, more sinister.  If there was a shade of green that could get its own episode of Criminal Minds, THAT'S the color I'm obsessing over right now.

Carnivorous green.

I've totally lost the source... working on it...
The plants might swallow you up kind of green.

But on my bedroom wall so I can go to sleep next to it!  I feel like this may give me good, intense - possibly murderous - dreams all set on the island of Dr. Moreau.

I've been referring to this look (because you might notice it elsewhere and need a handy name) as 'Heart of Darkness' because I keep remembering this dense, looming jungle in the book that makes me think of these colors.  But then I did a quick google search (blogger/journalist that I am) and realized that it's not the Amazonian jungle that I thought it was but instead the African wilderness and even though I'm 99% sure I wrote a paper on this book in high school I have a sneaking suspicion that I in no way actually read this book.

In fact, 'Heart of Darkness' the trend (TM) and the imaginary jungle I just created to fit my color story may be a kind of metaphor for something terribly racist but I can't remember because I couldn't be bothered to read the actual book when I was 15...??  Maybe it's like saying you want your living room to have a Manifest Destiny theme OMG I'M A TERRIBLE PERSON AND HORRIBLE DECORATOR.

Let's move out of the racist jungle that I made for myself and into the mountains.

David Zhao
I don't actually want a tropical theme just the color, right?  Right.

Yoshihiko Ueda
Maybe I could lean a bit more jewel tones but still lush and velvety and slightly creepy and a little magical.

This is sounding a lot like Forks, Washington...

Say it.  Out loud.

OK YES I REFERENCED TWILIGHT EVEN AFTER ALL THIS TIME.

Apparently I will not be satisfied if my bedroom doesn't have a hint of death or vamp moss or jungle floor decay in it.  Of course, no one will even care because they'll just walk in a be like, 'yeah, ok' and then walk out very quickly and my back story won't even matter.  All this carrying on is just a peek inside my head.  FOR YOU.

A mystery...

But I've got plenty of time for back story and mood boards because I've also decided that February is a 'No Spend' month for me.  This means I can only spend money on absolute essentials like gas and cheese.  I gave paint a pass though.  I'm not an unreasonable monster!  Great time to start some redecorating projects, huh?  I'm great with timing.

Something about this push for redecorating and organizing and purging also makes me want to take a financial pause.  I need to take stock and clean out before I can commit my bank account to something.

I want to give my entire retirement savings for the image above so obviously I need to lock up my monies from time to time.

See what I did there with the gates and the locking?  Yeah, I'm real subtle.

Somewhere here I think...
This is only about half of the images I had pulled that I liked, by the way.  I had about a hundred fifty-leven more but I thought y'all might be bored with a collage of menacing, dewy jungle leaves.  *I* wouldn't be bored but I just don't how far down the rabbit hole y'all are ready to go sometimes.

Ok can't get away from the jungle quite yet...

But let's get real.  I can't actually redo a room out of $200 and magical Twilight jungle madness rambling.  I'll have to make it out of $200 and an actual paint color where $150 of that going towards paint swatches.  So rather than more feeeeling pictures, I found some actual walls.  Gawd, I'm tearing through this redo already.  Yay me.

This confirms my green wall lust:

Susanna Vento via DesignLoveFest
Dark green, non-racist Heart of Darkness wall but maybe some lighter things to brighten up the whole... murdery, carnivorous vibe.  I'm surprised I actually like the copper here.

I also found that Little Green Notebook did a very similar color to the part of the fandeck I'm looking at.

Little Green Notebook
This is Benjamin Moore's Bavarian Forest and it looks dreamy.  Anyone remember the final results?  I can't find it.  The swatch in person is a little more blue than what I wanted but we'll definitely end up somewhere in this area.  Or maybe this color... who knows where sample #948982938743927 will end up??

Although that coral is bangin, it would drive me insane to have that bright of a color near my head.  I can deal with all the colors on the infinite rainbow of sadness, but not the rainbow of cheer.  Ew.

Abigail Ahern's London home in Rue Magazine
Maybe I'll end up with some, gulp, purple accents for even more of that magical Twilight sparkle moss feel.

Begonia leaves by Moonfruitmjuse
If I can't do purple, how bout a touch of velvety burgundy instead?

Martha Stewart
Or maybe just I'll just keep it simple with a wall of not-quite-Bavarian Forest and some eggy neutrals.  It'll sure help to keep the darkness away.  IF I should want to do that.

Also, what the fuck kind of animal lays a hunter green egg?  A Matt Fox and Shari Hiller animal?

But look, y'all!  IT HAS BEGUN:

I ain't fuckin' around.

This is BM's Essex Green which was the first sample.  I'll try to keep it under three for everyone's sanity.  I love the direction but it's a little too loafers, pearl necklace and Ralph Lauren plaid circa 1992.  Which is probably coming back in style right about now but it's not where my bedroom needs to be.  Remember, I want jungle shadows of encroaching evil but also light n' airy bedroom funtimes!

By the way, that's a dropcloth sheet NOT my bedroom sheets.  I may be color crazy but I have some dignity.

You suck, fake internet friends!

You know people, I really thought we had something here.  Something special.  Sure it was just a little knockaround blog about yurts, vaginas and unicorns but it was OURS.  Our little corner of the internet where we can look at some cool art while also making fun of conservatives at the same time.  I can't think of anything better.

But now all of that is ruined.  You've ruined it!

I woke up yesterday to this:
Everywhere.  At first I was like "AWESOME!"  The green campaign has finally taken off! Turqoise 15-5519 TCX you are goin DOWN muthafucka!!"  But then it all just seemed a little too much.  Everyone was in on it and wearing their green flashy buttons and dancing around talking in these weird lilting accents.  WTF?

But then I realized what happened.  You, my so-called internet "friends", went behind my back and organized an entire day dedicated to green without even telling me!!  You thievin bunch of assholes.  I know my idea is amazing but did you not think I would find out about it once it went worldwide?!

From the fabulous Mrs. Lilien
MADAME SUNDAY started this campaign bitches and nobody even thought to email me or anything and let me know we were wearing green yesterday?!  Not even a quick email, a post-it note, a tweet, a letter tacked to my door with a green hatchet??!!  FUCK YOU internet people!!  I MADE you and this green campaign what it is and so help me Jeebus I'll unmake you!!

Oh are these your green journals that you probably passed amongst yourselves with fun little green love notes?  I hope y'all get run over by an out-of-control green prius driven by a same sex married couple you bunch of douchebags.

This twelve year old knew about it?  Come ON!  And what's with this pinching thing if someone isn't wearing green?  We are a delusional civilized movement that doesn't resort to violence like some sort of desperate teabagger with a fake theory to prove!

And what about every bar I walked into (just a normal Wednesday pub crawl) was completely decorated with green?  Even the drinks were green!  How did you even do that?  Did you send in a highly specialized team of ninjas during the night to set all this up?

You know I love ninjas, reptiles AND 80's references!  How could you leave me out??!!

Even this rabid little fucker was part of the party.  Thanks a lot so-called 'friends'.   I think we could have really used his intensity to terrorize Michelle Bachmann but you had him too busy fucking around with pots and rainbows to be of any use.    He could have been our hero (in a half-shell?) but that dream went down in the sewer because of your drunken greed.

I hope you're happy.  You should think twice next time about playing with things you don't understand and leave the heavy drinking thinking to Madame Sunday and Charlemagne.

Not you too Stephen Drucker??!!

Stephen.  Just between us girls Madame Sunday always gets that tingly feeling in her nether parts anytime I open my mailbox and see that HB font adorning a warm, thick package of fabulosity.  I adore you and what you've done to HB over the last few years; I've listened to your interviews here and here;  so I was so disappointed to see this is my mailbox this weekend.

I think we've already thoroughly discussed my theories on blue this year and I can't believe that HB has succumbed to the conspiracy that is Pantone Turquoise 15-5519.  And with a bunch of bland interiors to boot.  For the record I like blue - my bedroom is blue - but Christ on a cracker this is getting old.  If you're going to commit to the mindfuck of a nation's color palette at least make me WANT to get on bored.  Oops I meant to type 'get on board' but I think my Freudian slip is appropriate.

I know you can't be perfect every time but next month get your shit together HB.  I'm counting on you because I can't afford a subscription to Living Etc and Elle Deco UK and I need something, anything besides Elle Decor and Veranda.  Don't make me switch to Canadian House and Home - they ARE really really nice, Stephen.

First it's Pantone, then it's our magazines, next Hollywood will start making movies filled with a bunch of blue people!!!

Wait.  Well fuck me...

I still want to get together with you for a cocktail or two Stephen.  Look how cute we are together.

Change we can believe in: Green for 2011

Ever since the ModernSauce undercover investigation team (it’s just Charlemagne in a saucy wig and a tiny Carmen Sandiego trench coat) discovered the real reason behind Pantone’s color of the year I thought it was only appropriate to flesh out this story in the interest of my boredom journalistic integrity. Madame Sunday is nothing if not drunk fair and balanced. We discussed green as the representative shade for liberals but I think we need to look at some hard evidence because it’s been a rough year since that senator from Illinois took office and we all need a little reminder that we are all in this together. The color of our movement has finally made it to the most powerful position in the world and there is nothing we can't accomplish.  We will not let the tyranny of Turquoise hold us back from our dreams of a nation filled with hybrid cars driven by same sex married couples!

Just look at Keith Olbermann here who is known for such subtlety on tv living in a house that practically screams for green.  I bet he's IM-ing Rachel Maddow about his organic cotton cargo shorts.  Can we get them in colors to match his siding?  Yes we can.

A dark olive Anderson?  Can we finally see him for his true self and accept him no matter which way his political staff swings?  Yes we can.

That chartreuse wall behind Leonardo is so blatantly saying "yes we can" but his eyes are saying "go fuck yourselves you racist pigs."  Once you go green then you're always clean.

Alec Baldwin is so liberal he doesn't even need to wear clothes to show you how green he is.  We will use the raw sex appeal of this shirtless man beast to distract Sarah Palin from her 2012 campaign.

The FLOTUS is not ashamed of her beliefs and proudly wears them on her sleeves - or just her bare arms.  Fashion conservatives be damned.

Here's a smattering of images at the White House last spring.  Obama is breaking down barriers and I think for the first time this millennium green will have its place in the executive office.  Even the water at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave has joined us in solidarity.  Yes we can.

Soon we're going to live in a post-Turquoise world and it'll look something like this:

Spring 2010 collection from Day via Trendey
Well... that's beautiful but it kinda looks like we just exited the yellow-brick road.  I think realistically we'll live in a melting pot because green looks good with everything and liberals are accepting of all colors, creeds, religious, etc. etc.  Except if you're Glenn Beck.  I really don't want to be accepting of him.

But what can the rest of us oppressed citizens do to stand up for our cause? Although we lack the power of fame and fortune we will NOT be shackled down by the tyranny of forced color palettes. We will design our living spaces to reflect who we are and shamelessly use green to reflect our fresh attitudes and the harmony we feel towards our brethren and country. We will pair it with shades of orange, spice and sunshine because it's warm and delicious and frankly it's better than this.

But this is real nice.  Real nice...

Can we use it in a Modern Country setting too?  Yes we can.

Vintage couches and lazy afternoon naps?  Yes we can.

source? sorry!
We will sit in our olive-painted offices at wonderfully distressed desks surrounded by carefully curated accessories and write letters to our senators and let them know that it is NOT okay to pose naked in Cosmopolitan even if it was the 80's and you were probably coked out.  Yes we can.

We need to fight for the gift that is our environment and all the bounty that she provides (like the ranunculus) and demand our leaders continue to strive for cleaner energy sources and the hiring of talented florists and photographers to capture the splendor of those accomplishments.  Yes we can.

The audacity of combining that gilt trim and wallpaper?  Hell fucking YES we can.

source?  sorry!
When we lay our heads down at night we will know that we are safe from Turquoise terrorists and the kind of people that want to see an end to our way of life. We will buy monogrammed sheets and Hollywood Regency chinoiserie accents because we will not let them win.

A change is gonna come.  I can feel it.  Lift your voices and paintbrushes high unto those mountains and declare the truth that we will pick trends and forecast colors because our country needs a palette emphasizing renewal and growth and warmth like a summer field after a thunderstorm.  And when times have us struggling we don't need an "effective escape from the everyday troubles of the world" as Pantone believes (I'm pretty sure living in a fantasy land nobody could afford is how we got into this mess you assholes).  What our country needs is a big fat dose of dirty, earthy, loamy reality because guess what grows out of the blackened mud that was our last year?  Beautiful green things that are delicious to the eye and also a promising future.  That budding promise is a reminder that no matter how dark our soil (substitute 'soul' here too if you want) we are part of a larger living organism and that with a fresh start (and a color wheel) we will always overcome.  Yes we can!

Maybe with a little help from Benjamin Moore...

*ModSauce note - it helps if you read parts of that in your best campaign Obama voice...  Or your Jesse Jackson voice.  I know you have one.
